Maritime Museum

Central Pier No. 9 and No. 10, Hong Kong Island

This was a Section 16 application for the proposed exhibition hall and ancillary restaurant in portions of G/F and 1/F, 2/F, 3/F (including Mezzanine Floor) of Central Pier 8. The site is located in “Other Specified Uses” annotated “Pier and Associated Facilities” zone. The client, Hong Kong Maritime Museum Limited, intended to create a space on the waterfront where people can enjoy and learn more about the Hong Kong maritime history. The application was approved with conditions in August 2010. The Town Planning Board also agreed to amend the approval conditions in October 2010 and in January 2011.  Masterplan was also commissioned as the consultant for the discharge of planning approval conditions.

Achievements:
-    Reinforced some of the established planning objectives for the harbourfront.
-    Consolidated a heritage node with the Star Ferry and provided a focus of activity on the waterfront.
-    Promoted better understanding of the history of the harbour.
-    Better utilization of a public area while ensuring main views from the Pier are retained.

In February 2013, the Hong Kong Maritime Museum Limited appointed Masterplan to apply for a direct grant of short term tenancy of Government Land in front of Central Pier No. 9 and No.10. It proposed to place an anchor and organize exhibition ancillary in the Hong Kong Maritime Museum. The short term tenancy was offered by the District Lands Office in July 2013.
